9/1/12 Sea kayak in homer AK

Well today was another day in homer for a kayaking trip in kachemak bay. Up and at em about 730 am to meet the water taxi at 830. Well the meeting was at 830 but we didn't need to be down to the boat until 9 for a half hour ride across the bay. We were going with seaside adventures which is owned by rick who does the excursions, instructions and adventures. Today his wife and volunteer helpers meet us upon arrival to don our boots and get prepped for the trip. About 30 mins later everyone was ready and off into the bay we went. It was low tide and the walk was way down to the waters edge, but everyone in and the water was smooth. First thing we saw was some land otters crossing the bay, the bald eagles and their chicks recently kicked out of the nest. Moving along Rick was picking up sea things like kelp and sea grasses that would be used for lunch. As we rounded the small island we approached a large group of sea otters then sat as in the mouth of the bay a pod of orcas passed by. They were being pushed by a couple boats but would return again for a second appearance. After about 2-3 hours in the kayaks we beached up and had lunch made from salmon, kelp, sea grasses and land grasses. It was good and most everything was picked up along the way. We had to quickly wrap up as tide was coming in and before we knew it or beach was gone and under water. Sagely back in we paddled through some more bays, saw the post office and back to the house at about 4p to get ready for the 430 water taxi back. It was a good day out on the water and what started out looking like raind turned into sunshine. Oh one last thing there was a humpback whale breach that I just missed on the way back, but it did see it breathe once, that was about it.

Once back to the rv we made dinner, all took showers and dumped the rv tanks before heading to Soldotna for the evening. We were staying in centennial park which is a city campground for 17$ for the night. This is a nice campground right on the kenai river and offers good fishing and nice sites too. That's it for today and first fishing trip tomorrow.
